My Big Trauma

I don’t know how my life would have unfolded if my world had not been smashed into millions of tiny shards by a fusillade of gunfire that I didn’t even hear.

My major life trauma, or what I call Big Trauma, started with a late-night phone call, one of those calls you never want to receive.

When I put the receiver to my ear, it was my mother’s voice, quivering like I never heard it before. And then, without warning, she unleashed a torrent of words that stunned me to the point that I suddenly needed to swivel the kitchen chair around and sit down.

“Dad’s been shot. He’s lying on the sidewalk.”To this day, the memories of that night remain crystal clear. They roll through my mind like the familiar scenes of a movie on an endless loop that I can’t stop. I see myself standing up, rising from the kitchen chair where I sat to stabilize myself during Mom’s call.
